I've been a pattern master for nearly twenty years. When a client sends in a design, I'm the first person to look at it. My job is to figure out whether that design can actually become a real, wearable sock.
People often think it's simple—take a picture, put it on a sock, done. But it really isn't.
First, I look at the pattern. Is it too complex? Too many thin lines that will get lost in the knit? Some designs look great on a screen but simply can't be knitted. I have to find ways to simplify without losing the spirit of the design.
Second, I match the colors. Yarn looks different from what you see on a screen. I flip through hundreds of color swatches to find the closest match. Most clients trust me on this. When they don't, I show them a physical sample first.
Third, I wear it myself. I put the sample on and walk around for a full day. Is the cuff too tight? Does the heel rub? If anything feels even slightly off, I go back and adjust.
While I'm sampling, Old Zhang's workshop is already preparing on their side. The moment my sample is confirmed, his machines are ready to go. No wasted days.
I have a notebook full of settings—yarn blends, knitting densities, color formulas. It's dog-eared and stained, but I still write in it almost every week. Twenty years in, and I'm still learning.
