Before SOXFUN, I worked in consumer goods. Back then, when companies wanted branded merchandise, they'd go for mugs, tote bags, caps—the usual things. None of them are bad. They all have the same problem though: people use them a couple of times, and then they end up in a drawer somewhere. They don't stay in anyone's daily life.
It wasn't until I switched to socks that I realized how well they work for branding.
First, everyone wears socks. Men, women, young, old—it doesn't matter. Unlike a mug that someone might not use, socks don't come with a "maybe I'll use this" hesitation. They're a "definitely I'll use this" item.
Second, socks get noticed. You see them when someone crosses their legs, when they walk, when they sit down. It's not in-your-face, but it's there.
Third, socks fit everyone. No sizes to worry about. No calculating how many S, M, or L to order. One size covers almost everyone. It makes inventory a lot simpler.
Fourth, people keep socks they like. A decent pair of socks with a good design gets picked out of the drawer and worn. And every time they get worn, your brand gets seen.
Fifty pairs to start, no pressure. Next time you're thinking about branded merch, give socks a thought. Unassuming, but it works.
